Memorable Things to Do with Kids in Oxfordshire

When it comes to planning days out, our location balances rural quietude with exceptional access to local attractions. If you are looking for engaging things to do with kids, Oxfordshire delivers options for every age group.

• Millets Farm Centre: Located just a short drive away, this local favourite is a fantastic day out. Over the summer months, you can explore their famous Maize Maze, the woodland area, pedal go-karts, and garden games. Along with an animal walkway, playground, garden centre, cafe and farm shop on-site, it easily fills a full day of fun for the whole family.
• High Lodge Farm: Just up the road in Culham, this beautiful farm is dedicated to traditional outdoor childhood fun. Over the summer, they host special “Little Explorers” woodland stay-and-play sessions for under-fives, alongside an outdoor games area featuring table tennis, giant Jenga, and giant straw bale play.
• Abingdon Abbey Meadows: Located just a short, scenic stroll from our grounds, Abbey Meadows is a paradise for families. It features an outdoor pool, splash park (ideal for warmer days), an epic adventure playground, and plenty of green space for children (and doggos) to run free. The park is edged with a level tarmac path so is both wheelchair, pushchair and balance bike friendly. You can walk to Abbey Meadows from the barn, either through town or over the lock.
• Take to the Thames: Most people enjoy the Thames beauty from the national trail running alongside the river, but why not take to the water? There are a couple of companies in town to hire anything from paddle boards and kayaks to row boats, fishing boats or even a river cruiser if you want to travel in a little more style!
• Oxford University Museum of Natural History & Pitt Rivers Museum: Located just eight miles away, these world-class, interconnected museums are a magnificent rainy-day option for family breaks near Oxford. Children will love standing beneath towering dinosaur skeletons and exploring cabinets filled with fascinating historical treasures. Not only is this one of my favourite spots in Oxford but it is also a firm favourite for my nieces when they visit (since they were as little as 3!). Of course, Oxford also has some other great museums but the Natural History trumps the others in my family!
• The Story Museum: The Story Museum Oxford is a fun family museum. Celebrating stories through immersive exhibitions, galleries & events for children, families and adults. Tumble down the rabbit hole. Push through the wardrobe doors into Narnia. Play on the big storytelling bed.
• Blenheim Palace: A short drive from the Barn, this majestic World Heritage Site offers an extensive walled garden, a giant hedge maze, and a dedicated adventure play area that keeps younger visitors entertained for hours while adults admire the stunning architecture, perfectly-kept gardens and jampacked history of the Palace. Explore the wider grounds and see if you can find Harry Potter’s Whomping Willow!

The Thames Path

Because Kingfisher Barn is situated mere minutes from the River Thames, you can step directly from your door onto the historic Thames Path. The trails here are remarkably flat and gentle, making them perfectly suited for pushchairs, toddlers, and leisurely family strolls.

 

Rye Farm Meadow & Lock Walks

Walk along the riverbank to Abingdon Lock, where children can watch the boats pass through the locks. The surrounding meadows are broad and beautifully maintained, offering the quintessential setting to lay down a blanket, unpack a wicker basket, and enjoy a family picnic under the summer sun.

Our Self-Catering Cottages: A Home Away from Home

A successful family holiday relies heavily on having the space to relax together comfortably at the end of an adventurous day. Our beautiful self catering cottages and lodges provide exactly that flexibility.

For larger families or group bookings, our spacious Kyte and Kestrel Lodges each sleep up to eight guests across four versatile bedrooms. Designed with magnificent high-beamed ceilings and large windows that flood the open-plan living and dining areas with natural light, they offer a wonderful setting for shared family meals and games, or even special family celebrations. Our latest party was a 90th with 3 generations of family and friends all getting together in our lovely lodge!

For mid-sized families, Stable Cottage comfortably accommodates four guests (with space for two more on a sofa bed), providing a lovely ground-floor layout. We also offer smaller options like Hazel Cottage (sleeping three), alongside characterful B&B rooms situated around our quiet courtyard garden, allowing grandparents or extended family members to enjoy their own privacy while staying close to the main group.

High chairs and travel cots are happily provided free of charge upon request, and because we know that a true family holiday includes everyone, all our properties are proudly dog-friendly.

• Summer Family Fun at the Weston Library (Oxford): Running on select dates throughout late July and August, the Bodleian Libraries host their “Wonder of Birds” interactive family sessions. These are free, drop-in events packed with crafts, storytelling, and creative activities suitable for all ages.
• Outdoor Cinema at Milton Hill House: Located just outside Abingdon, this beautiful estate hosts family-friendly outdoor movie nights during July, offering a magical way to watch classic films under the stars on a warm summer evening.
• Abingdon International Fireworks Festival: Held at the nearby Abingdon Airfield on the final weekend of August (29th), this spectacular event is a true highlight of the summer. Alongside jaw-dropping musical firework displays from world-class teams, the afternoon features hot air balloons, a massive fairground with over 100 rides, and excellent local food stalls.
• Paint Abingdon Pink: Paint Abingdon Pink is Against Breast Cancer’s annual community fundraising event, proudly held each year in Abingdon Market Square. Each year, Paint Abingdon Pink transforms Abingdon Market Square into a vibrant, welcoming space filled with colour, music and community spirit. Families, local businesses and community groups come together to enjoy a free, family-friendly day, all while raising vital funds. Join in the fun on July 4th, 10am – 3.30pm.
